Since 1981, when I for the first time visited Zermatt, I had been a regular in Mattertal. This valley certainly offer the largest choice of mountains higher than 4000 metres, and the most famous of them all is Matterhorn. For a start, I had not the big interest in climbing Matterhorn, partly because I expected the mountain to be crowded with tourists, partly because the quality of the rock on the mountain is notorious questionable. Thus I felt pretty fine with just watching the beauty of the mountain from the summit of one of the many other mountains in the region. |
